You should plan on a minimum average of 9 hours per week of “time on task.” Time on task includes any time that students spend interacting with course materials and participating in learning activities, including but not limited to readings, projects, assignments, videos, student-student or student-professor interaction, and exams.

7. Catalog Description:

This course provides students with fundamental computer skills needed during and after college. Hardware, software, Windows O/S, file management, Internet, e-mail, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access are covered in this course. Students will be introduced to the use of local and wide area networks. Not open to students who have successfully completed CS 1003 or IS 1133.

8. Course Purpose / Goals:

The purpose of this course is to provide you with the ability to apply microcomputers, readily and comfortably, to common business situations. In particular, the word processing capability will be of immediate use in fulfilling the instructional assignments in other courses at NSU and elsewhere. Spreadsheets can be used whenever you need to manipulate numeric data and produce information that can be both descriptive and predictive. Databases are the textual counterparts of spreadsheet programs. They are used for keeping, analyzing, and presenting lists of textual information. Presentation software will allow you to produce professional-looking presentations.

9. Student Learning Outcomes:

After completing this course, students should be able to:

• Exhibit proficiency in the use of word processing techniques to produce professional quality documents.
• Apply basic concepts of spreadsheet technology to create, and edit worksheets, and, produce charts from worksheet data.
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of managing databases: adding, editing and deleting records, designing and implementing queries, forms, and reports.
• Generate electronic, professional quality, presentations using PowerPoint technology.
• Develop working knowledge of the Internet, including the use of electronic mail, transfer files, and conduct searches on the Internet.
• Integrate information across applications using the Windows environment. Recognize the value and ease of importing and exporting data from one application to another.
• Manage files (copy, move, rename, and delete) and folders (create, rename, delete) in the Windows environment.
• Strengthen their ability to comprehend and synthesize information; and improve their writing, oral, and critical thinking skills.

10. Instructional Methods / Strategies:

Instructional training videos will be used to help explain and illustrate some of the assignments in this course. If you would like closed captioning (CC) for any of these videos, please let me know, and I will gladly provide you this service.

12. Instructional Materials:

No required textbook.

Students might consider purchasing a USB flash drive (e.g., JumpDrive). These portable storage devices can be very helpful in storing, carrying, and transferring information between home and school. All students are expected to have their accounts on the NSU networks by the end of the first week of the course.

Letter grades are assigned at the end of the semester based on the following scale where X denotes your average.

14. Class and Instructor Policies:

COVID-19 Absence Statement: Students who have a prolonged absence because of COVID-19 illness, who quarantine because of exposure to coronavirus, or who must provide care for family members who are sick or quarantined have the responsibility to 1) provide documentation to the Office of Student Affairs and 2) contact their instructor within 24 hours of the first missed class meeting to arrange for reasonable accommodations. Students will not be penalized for non-attendance due to coronavirus-related reasons but still have the responsibility to make up any missed exams, assignments, homework, etc. Students who have a temporary or permanent disability that may be impacted by COVID-19 should contact Student Disability Services. All work is to be prepared and submitted according to the directions given. Extended illness, injury, or emergency situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis at the professor's discretion.

16. Student Support:

17. Course Concerns or Complaints

Students who wish to express a concern about a course or academic issue are encouraged to follow this process:

• First, talk with the instructor. If the situation is such that the student is concerned about potential discomfort or retaliation, then the student is welcome to move to the next step and contact the department chair without talking with the faculty member first.
• Second, if the instructor is unable to resolve the issue, the student may talk with the department chair. If the student is uncertain as to who the department chair is, s/he can contact the registrar with the course prefix and number, and that office can provide the information.
• Third, if the department chair is unable to resolve the issue, then the student is welcome to contact the dean's office.
• Finally, if the dean is unable to resolve the issue, the student may contact Academic Affairs. It is important that the student initiate action (not parents, partners, or other relatives) and begin at the faculty or department chair level as most issues can be resolved there.

18. Grade Appeal

A student may petition a course grade change by using the Grade Appeals Process if satisfactory resolution cannot be achieved after consultation with the instructor and/or Dean. The Grade Appeals Process must be formally initiated with a written appeal to the Dean within four months following awarding of the original course grade. Please contact the dean of the college in which the grade was given for a copy of the grade appeals process and the conditions which allow for the appeal of a course grade.
